Measuring Your Canoe for a Custom Spray Deck

A spray deck is a precision fit — it attaches directly to your gunwales, wraps over every thwart and seat, and works under real conditions. These measurements give us everything we need to build one that fits your boat exactly.

This page walks you through each measurement step by step. When you're ready to record your numbers, you can fill them in through our online measurement form or download a printable PDF if you'd prefer a paper copy to write on while you work.

Step 1

Preparation

Set the boat on sawhorses or stands in an open space where you can walk around it freely. Gather your tools before you start — the process moves quickly once you begin measuring.

A measuring tape long enough to stretch from bow deck tip to stern deck tip
A yardstick or rigid ruler for measuring gunwale widths side-to-side
A cloth tailor's tape or strip of paper for the gunwale wrap measurement
A pen, pencil, or this form open on your phone
Masking tape to secure the long tape in position (optional but helpful)
A helper to hold the other end of the tape
Measure two or three times at each position. A spray deck is built to tighter tolerances than a cover. If it's built to incorrect measurements, alterations require additional time and materials — it's worth the extra minute to double-check.

All measurements in this guide are in inches, rounded to the nearest quarter-inch unless otherwise noted. The gunwale cross-section measurements (Step 7) are to the nearest ⅛ inch.

Step 2

Overall Length

Measure from the tip of the bow deck to the tip of the stern deck. Let the tape rest on the thwarts — do not stretch it tight in a straight line. If your canoe has recurve in the bow or stern, do not include the recurve. Measure only between the deck tips.

Leave the tape in place. Secure both ends with masking tape. You'll use it as a reference for the remaining measurements, so leave it in position until you're finished.

Step 3

Gunwale Widths at 1-Foot Intervals

Using the measuring tape secured to the boat, measure the gunwale width at every foot from bow to stern. This is the distance from the outermost edge of one gunwale to the outermost edge of the other — include the outwales in the measurement.

Always measure from the bow. Do not restart from the stern. The stern will rarely fall exactly on a foot mark — that's expected. Leave unused positions blank.

This is the most time-consuming step — about 10 minutes for most canoes. It maps the full hull shape and is the most critical data for your spray deck pattern. Take your time.

Record a width at every foot mark — 1-foot, 2-foot, 3-foot, and so on — all the way to the stern. The stern will rarely fall exactly on a foot mark, and that's fine. If your boat is shorter than a given position, just leave it blank on the form.

Step 4

End Cap & Deck Measurements

Measure the end caps or decks at both bow and stern. For each, we need three measurements: the length of the end cap, the width at the narrow tip, and the width at the wide edge where it meets the gunwales.

You'll record these three measurements for both the bow and the stern end caps on the form.

Step 5

Thwart & Carry Handle Locations

Using your reference tape, measure from the tip of the bow deck to the center of each carry handle, thwart, and yoke. Also record the gunwale width at each location. Not all canoes have all positions — leave unused rows blank on the form.

For each thwart or handle, you'll record two numbers: its distance from the bow, and the gunwale width at that location.

Step 6

Seat Positions

We need the seat locations to position the cockpit openings. Measure from the tip of the bow deck to the back edge of each seat. On the form, you'll record one measurement for the bow seat (or C1 seat) and one for the stern seat.

Sliding seats: Give us your typical seat position. The spray deck allows about 1-1/2 inches of rearward and 4 inches of forward movement from the location you provide.
Step 7

Gunwale Cross-Section

The spray deck snaps onto your gunwales, so we need precise measurements of the gunwale cross-section. Measure these to the nearest ⅛ inch — tighter tolerance than the other measurements.

Gunwale Width

Measure from the top inner edge of the inwale to the outer edge of the outwale. If your canoe only has inwales (no outwales), this is the only measurement we need — skip the Wrap and Lip measurements below.

Gunwale Wrap

Measure from the top inner edge of the inwale, up and over the top of the gunwale, down to where the bottom of the outwale meets the hull. If you don't have a flexible tape, wrap a strip of paper around the gunwale, mark it, and measure the paper.

Gunwale Lip

If you have aluminum or vinyl gunwales with a lip that extends down the hull (for riveting), measure the height of the lip. Most wood and carbon gunwales won't have one — leave this blank if yours don't.
