Spray Decks & Splash Covers

Custom-patterned. Expedition-proven.

Built for the water you actually paddle.

An expedition spray deck has one job: keep the lake or river out of your canoe when conditions turn serious. That job requires a deck that fits your hull precisely, not approximately. Every RedLeaf spray deck is patterned to a specific canoe design, with anatomic tunnels, reinforced battens, and a quick-release front seam for safe exit in a capsize.

Aqualon Edge fabric. Brass marine hardware. Made to order, because a spray deck that doesn't fit your boat doesn't keep water out of your boat.

The Sea Wind spray deck. Verlen's legacy, modernized.

Verlen Kruger designed the Sea Wind, Mad River Monarch, and Sawyer Loon as purpose-built expedition canoes with identical cockpit geometry. They remain some of the most capable decked canoes ever built — and finding a proper spray deck for one has never been easy.

Our Sea Wind deck is made from the same Aqualon Edge fabric Verlen specified, paired with a modernized body tunnel that adds a quick-release front seam and reinforced battens. Safer, more comfortable, and equally seaworthy. Available with sewn-in HDPE battens if your original aluminum battens are gone.

Why custom-patterned matters

A spray deck that doesn't fit your hull doesn't keep water out.

Generic spray decks are cheaper. Here's what they cost you on the water.

Fit determines function.

A spray deck that gaps at the gunwales lets water in with every wave. A deck patterned to your hull's exact contours sits flush, seals tight, and sheds water the way it's supposed to. The fit is the product.

Safety you can trust.

In a capsize, you need to get out — fast. A generic deck with improvised attachments can hang up, bind, or trap gear. A properly patterned deck with a quick-release front seam opens cleanly and predictably every time.

Insurance for the trip of a lifetime.

A properly fitted spray deck is the difference between turning back and pushing through. For a $4,000 canoe and the trip you've been planning for years, it's the most cost-effective gear decision you'll make.

Designed for real conditions

Safety features informed by expedition experience.

These aren't just pieces of nylon pack cloth stretched over a canoe. Every feature is designed for how open canoes actually behave in rough water — and for what happens when things go wrong.

  1. Quick-release front seam. In a capsize, the anatomic spray tunnel opens from the front, giving you a clear exit path. No fumbling with draw cords or excess fabric under pressure.

  2. Anatomic body tunnels. Contoured over your torso so the deck moves with you, not against you. Allows full paddling range of motion and minimizes excess fabric.

  3. Marine-grade Aqualon Edge. Truly waterproof and UV resistant, its a fabric that will go the distance. Topside vinyl coating so you never have sticky, delaminating urethane on the backside.

  4. Hull-specific patterning. Cut to your canoe's exact gunwale dimensions. A deck that doesn't fit precisely is a deck that leaks.

Trusted in serious conditions.

Ran the full length of Lake Superior with this deck. Three weeks, and the only water in the boat was from my paddle drip. The fit on my Northstar is perfect.

Mark T. — Northstar Polaris, Lake Superior

Upgraded from a homemade deck and it's not even comparable. The quick-release actually works under stress, and the tunnel lets me paddle without fighting the fabric.

Sarah K. — Wenonah Encounter, Boundary Waters

Second spray deck from RedLeaf for a second boat. The tandem deck on our Prospector handled everything Georgian Bay threw at us. Wouldn't trust another maker for this.
