Expedition Spray Decks - Tandem Canoes

Tandem Expedition Spray Decks

Two paddlers. One deck. Zero compromise.

Custom-patterned to your hull. Made to order. Made to trust.

A tandem expedition spray deck covers more boat, serves two paddlers, and handles the load and leverage forces of a longer hull in serious conditions. That's why every tandem deck we build is patterned to your specific canoe — bow section, center section, and stern section cut to your hull's geometry, with dual anatomic tunnels fitted independently for each paddler.

Three-panel construction, marine-grade Aqualon Edge fabric, and 300D hex grid ripstop reinforcements at every high-wear point. Quick-release front seams on both tunnels for safe, independent capsize exit.

Materials & Construction

Built with marine-grade materials. Nothing less.

Every component is specified for performance, not price.

Aqualon Edge

Marine-grade, 8.75 oz vinyl-coated polyester with a 7-year warranty against UV damage. Waterproof, durable, and built for years of hard use. The standard for expedition canoe decks.

300D Hex Grid Ripstop

Gunwale wraps and end caps reinforced with 300D hex grid ripstop polyester for maximum abrasion resistance at every contact point.

400D Ripstop Tunnels

Cockpit tunnels sewn from waterproof 400D ripstop polyester. Lighter and more comfortable against the body than the deck fabric.

Stainless Hardware

Black brass snap studs and marine-rated fasteners throughout. Built to survive salt, sand, and seasons.

A fully outfitted tandem expedition deck with all attachment hardware weighs about 6 pounds for a typical 18-foot tripping canoe.

Standard Features

Every tandem expedition deck includes:

Three-section construction

Bow section, center section, and stern section — each cut separately for precise contouring to your hull's geometry. The center section bridges the two cockpits and can be used independently as a partial deck.

Dual anatomic cockpit tunnels

Each paddler gets an independent fitted tunnel with three-panel construction that contours over knees and lap. Removable side battens prevent pooling and fabric droop.

Quick-release closures

Both tunnels feature 2-inch Velcro closures with reinforced rip-tabs for fast, independent exit in a capsize. Safety first, always.

Paddle parks

Two integrated paddle parks on the center section so both paddlers can stow their paddles during portages or when hands need to be free.

Map case D-rings

D-rings on the center section, just forward of the stern paddler, for securing a map case, GPS, or other gear within reach on the water.

Painter line tie-downs

Bow and stern tie-down points with optional grommets for painter lines to pass through the deck.

Roll-away tunnel stowage

Both tunnels roll up and stow flat when you want deck protection without body tunnels — ideal for warm-weather paddling or paddling with different crew configurations.

300D hex grid ripstop reinforcements

Gunwale wraps and bow/stern end caps in 300D hex grid ripstop polyester at every point where the deck contacts the hull.

Custom color options

Choose from five Aqualon Edge colors: Pacific Blue, Forest Green, Charcoal Grey, Red, and Black.

Cockpit Tunnels

Two tunnels. Independent. Fitted to each paddler.

Every tandem deck has two cockpit tunnels — one for the bow paddler, one for the stern. Each tunnel is independently fitted with three-panel anatomic construction that drapes over your knees and lap without excess fabric.

Removable HDPE side battens lift the deck off your legs and prevent the inversion that causes pooling. The 2-inch Velcro front seam on each tunnel opens with a single pull of the reinforced rip-tab — each paddler can exit independently, without affecting the other's tunnel.

When you don't need the tunnels, they roll up and stow flat against the deck. Full protection, zero compromise.

Center Section

The bridge between bow and stern.

The center section connects the two cockpits and carries the paddle parks, map case D-rings, and gear-access points that both paddlers rely on. It's the working surface of the deck — where paddles stow, where maps live, where gear stays accessible between portages.

The center section can also be used independently. Running without tunnels on a warm day? The center section provides splash protection and gear coverage while leaving both cockpits open.

Attachment Systems

Two ways to secure your deck.

Every spray deck needs a reliable connection to your canoe. We offer two attachment systems — choose based on your paddling style and how much flexibility you need when loading your boat.

Standard snap attachment system on a canoe, showing snaps mounted directly to the spray deck edge with studs below the gunwale

Standard Snaps

Low profile, durable, and simple. Snaps mount directly to the deck edge; studs attach to your hull about 1" below the gunwales. The gunwales protect the snaps from paddle strikes and obstacles. Tension and position are fixed once installed — no adjustments, no fussing.

Best for paddlers who want clean, permanent, no-fuss attachment.

Hybrid Snap-and-Lace

Snaps anchor a lacing system to the hull, giving you the quick on-and-off of snaps with the tensioning flexibility of laces. Allows you to adjust deck tension depending on conditions and load. Snaps sit 5–6 inches below the gunwales, so they're more exposed than standard snaps.

Best for paddlers who want adjustable tension for loading gear higher than the gunwales.

Installation

Drilled and riveted snap studs.

The industry standard for a reason. Drilling and riveting snap studs to your hull is the most durable, most reliable attachment method — especially for deep wilderness use where there's no margin for equipment failure.

If the idea of drilling into your hull gives you pause, we understand. Our detailed installation guide and optional rivet gun rental ($10 rental, $20 refundable deposit) make the process straightforward. The hardware kit includes black brass snap studs, backing washers, and 1/8" diameter blind rivets.

Rivet lengths in the standard kit are 3/8". You may need longer rivets from your local hardware store to accommodate ribs, core material, or repairs specific to your hull.

Getting Started

Your spray deck starts with your hull.

Select your canoe from our pattern library at the top of this page and configure your options. Don't see your boat in the dropdown? No problem — we build all of our patterns from measurements and don't need your boat in the loft.

Follow our measurement guide. It takes about 15 minutes with a tape measure, and we'll create a custom pattern for your hull. For one-off and out-of-production hulls, a one-time $40 patterning fee covers the additional design work.
