Gunwale Bag

Chapstick. Your phone. A camera. Sunblock. Bug spray. Snacks. A hat and gloves. Fishing tackle. Wrappers and trash. Your headlamp.

What do all of those things have in common?

You want to access them from your canoe seat without having to dig through a portage pack that is, no doubt, just out of reach. They're also the things that roll around in the bottom of the boat, getting wet and making portages look like you're cleaning up after a yard sale.

The Gunwale Bag, lovingly known around the shop as a JGB (Jeremy's Gunwale Bag), solves those problems. It easily attaches just below the gunwale with two strips of adhesive loop Velcro and adhesive YKK SNAD snaps.

They come in two sizes, small and large. The small is about a liter in volume and is perfect for low-profile storage in racing canoes, pack canoes, and the tight bow of fast tandems. The large gunwale bag holds about 4 liters of stuff, easily swallowing a rain jacket, a water bottle, and a huge assortment of at-hand gear, plus has compression straps and attachment loops to tether gear that you don't want to lose.

Both sizes will keep gear secure during portages, so you can grab your pack, put your canoe on your shoulders, and go, without having to do a bunch of housekeeping, first.

We think the JGBs are pretty rad and hope you do, too.

Housekeeping notes: The small JGB is only available in black. Also, JGBs are not waterproof!

Installation and care instructions are in our Resources Library, here: Gunwale Bag Installation Instructions

If you would like to use the gunwale bag in multiple canoes, additional mounting kits are available here: Gunwale Bag Mounting Kit

  • Reinforced stitching and edge binding All seams sewn with Amann Outdoor Pro thread and finished with heavy-duty, UV-resistant edge binding. Built to hold up under punishing sunlight and years of outdoor exposure.
  • Custom color options Choose a solid color, contrasting bow, or contrasting bow and stern. Six Sunbrella Marine colors available: Cadet Grey, Jockey Red, Pacific Blue, Emerald Green, Sunflower Yellow, and Bright Orange.

Outdoor Storage

Your hull versus the elements. Year-round.

UV damage is the single biggest threat to a canoe stored outdoors. It degrades gelcoat, darkens Kevlar, breaks down adhesives, and fades finishes — damage that accumulates steadily until the hull is noticeably aged. Add rain pooling, freeze-thaw cycles, road grit from nearby traffic, tree sap, bird droppings, and pollen, and an unprotected canoe ages measurably every season.

Sunbrella Marine blocks 100% of UV light and sheds rain while breathing to prevent the moisture buildup that breeds mildew. The solution-dyed acrylic fabric holds its color for a decade because the pigment is in the fiber, not on it. A canoe under a Canoe Coat looks and performs the way it did when the cover went on — season after season.

If you own a wood-and-canvas canoe, a boat with wood gunwales, or any hull that lives outdoors between paddles, the Canoe Coat is the best outdoor storage cover you can get.

Bright yellow Canoe Coat fitted over a canoe stored against a wooden wall, secured with straps and buckles.

Two covers. Different jobs.

Both are patterned to your hull. Both use premium materials. The difference is what you need the cover to do.

We make perfect patterns from measurements.

Our pattern library covers hundreds of canoe models, but we add new ones regularly. If your canoe isn’t listed in our library, follow the measurement guide and we’ll create a perfect custom pattern for your hull.

For one-off and most out-of-production hulls, a one-time $40 patterning fee covers the additional design work.
